Comparative Review: ROTF Brakedown vs HFTD Oil Pan

Oil Pan is excited because Simon Furman hasn't acknowledged his existence... yet.

One frayed Stunticon and one obscure Micromaster. A match made on my coffee table. Which scout class Lamborghini is right for you?

As a huge fan of the Stunticons, Brakedown in almost any incarnation is a must for me. This particular version was part of the fifth wave of Revenge of the Fallen scout class figures.

So hated is he by the mighty Furman that he has been killed three times.

Brakedown's colors are spot on for the character. Flawless white car bits with blue robot bits and his characteristic blushing bride face. The head sculpt is vaguely reminiscent of G1 Breakdown, but it has enough subtle movie details to keep the movie aesthetic flowing uninterrupted. Admittedly, he doesn't have a lot going on for a ROTF scout. He's the Decepticon's response to ROTF Rollbar in that he's meant to be a simple no-nonsense toy with mild G1 aesthetics and he pulls it off quite well.

Skystalker was never a good name for a guy who transforms into a car.

Oil Pan, as I've mentioned before when I waxed lyrical about him, is a clear homage to the Micromaster, Skystalker. His color scheme in robot mode is far more striking than Brakedown's. Thanks to Botcon, we're all use to Brakedown's look, so perhaps the unfamiliarity with purple on orange is what draws me to Oil Pan more. The elimination of white as the dominate color also brings out more sculpted detail. His personality is also preferable over his predecessor. I immediately appreciate any Decepticon willing to use a mini-van full of children as a shield.

Those 12 minute workout videos will get rid of that.

On of the complaints about this mold are those enormous arm panels. They are the alt-mode's doors and they look wrong just hanging off the arms like that.

Ultra Scoliosis.

The other complain I have is the backpack. It sticks out way too far and there is no way to condense it or fold it flush with the back.

Make up your own joke about Furman hating Lamborghini.

In alt-mode, Brakedown is a squat little white sports car. It's impressive how most of his robot mode's colors are hidden. This car is really fun to play with because it's just a simple car, nothing more to it. He has a red hood with a Decepticon symbol and another on the license plate.

Butt-Chest

Oil Pan's robot mode colors vanish just like Brakdown's. However, I find an orange Lamborghini less appealing. The white stripe detail on both sides is rather nice and he has managed to keep the same silver paint apps on the rims as Brakedown.

He'll deliver you an Orange Slice in 0-60 seconds.

Oil Pan also retains the Decepticon license plate.

Vitamin C has never been so evil.

This is a great scout class mold that is a lot of fun to play with. It's got a lot of character sculpted into it. You cannot go wrong with either version, but if I were to suggest one it would be Oil Pan. Brakedown is too familiar and he's been done before. Oil Pan is unconventional and he has a combination of colors you don't see a lot... or ever.

The Pros:
Simple and fun transformation.
Lots of character.
G1 nods.
Oil Pan revives an obscure Micromaster.
Stunticons are always cool.
Two distinct decos.

The Cons:
Annoying backpack.
Distracting arm kibble.
Clearance issues with the alt-mode inherent to the mold.

The Bottom Line (Brakedown)
Price: $7.99 or less.
Location: Most online stores.
Vehicle Mode: 8/10
Robot Mode: 7/10
Overall: 15/20, recommended for Stunticon fans.

Furman might shoot you just for owning Brakedown.

They're both awesome, but you know me. I'm a sucker for those obscure dudes.
