Comparative Review: Classics Mirage vs Universe SE Dragstrip

And last one for the moment (I've run out) we have Classics Mirage and Universe Special Edition Dragstrip

No messing around here, what you see is what you get; two futuristic, but believeable Formula 1 cars. Mirage (left) has the edge with the sponsor details and clever G1 references, whereas Dragstrip (right)suffers from being just a bit too yellow. The original Dragstrip had a big chrome engine in the back and it's sorely missing here. The box art shows a silver stripe to hint at the G1 design, but it was obviously dropped before production and that hurts the look a lot, especially as he is a Special Edition toy.

Mirage is the original version of this mould, which also has a second repaint in 2007 movie Fracture. He's a lovely version of his character, slim and agile, but with those great 'G1 wonky perspective' feet. The wheels behind the head don't bother me, they just kind of add some personality to him and aren't so bad. Dragstrip is a smart repaint with no remoulding whatsoever and I can see it fitting that character too. He's so desperate to win all the time and that robot body looks like it is built to do just that.

Up close, Dragstrip benefits from a nicely defined Decepticon symbol, but it's frustrating that only the front half of his head has been painted. The detail around the face has got a little lost, too.

Mirage is blazing with some serious lightpiping, but compared with Dragstrip it becomes very obvious that he's lacking in the faction symbol department. The touches of silver in the vents around his head do work to define the face well, though; he looks like he's wearing a crash helmet!

Put next to each other, Dragstrip is the loser in this battle. I'm disappointed that there weren't more paint apps for the price and although the plastic feels lovely, his paint apps are kind of sloppy and slightly sticky to the touch. As a plus, he does fit together a little better than my Mirage. Now all I need is to get me a 2007 Fracture...

Mirage is one of my all-time favourites. I want Fracture because he's (she's?) based on a Russian design and I have an appreciation of anything Russian :)

I only have Fracture and Dragstrip and of the two I prefer Fracture because she has a lovely paint scheme.

Would love to get my hands on a Mirage though, he looks gorgeous.
